Here are some of our Blood Donors

We need more blood donors, please contact the clinic if you feel you can help

Donor Cat “Lime” (Owner Eugene)

This pretty girl is called “Lime,” was found in the middle of a pond in March 2014, very skinny and cold. She has been with me since. I wanted her to be a donor as she has always been a healthy cat and as an ex-staff member of the WAVH vets, I knew how hard it was to find the suitable donor at 2 AM!

Donor Dog “Bear” (Owner Erika)

Bear is an 8-year-old crossbreed rescue dog! He is a fantastic dog with a very calm gentle demeanor. I wanted Bear to be a blood donor, so he can tell all his friends that he saves lives! He is very relaxed in the clinic when he comes in to donate and gets lots of love and yummy treats. He has donated many times over the past few years and is now a big favourite of the team. He is nearing retirement now as a blood donor, but he still visits the team now and then for cuddles.

Donor Dog “Sven” (Owner Erika)

Sven is a 1-year-old crossbreed rescue dog. He is very active and playful with his dog brother and human brothers and sister. Sven had had surgery on a broken leg when I first fostered him, but he has fully recovered now. I wanted Sven to be a blood donor as it has been so rewarding to see my older dog, Bear, be such a successful donor. Sven has been blood typed and is a universal donor, so he is ready and waiting for the next emergency.

Donor Cat “Alan” (Owner Craig)

Alan is a 5-year-old Devon Rex cat. Devon Rex cats are pretty cool and have the personality of a dog! Alan doesn’t have much fur, so it is pretty easy to find his veins to take blood for donations. I first got Alan blood typed to see if he was the rare cat type B due to his breed, but he is type A which is far more common so also great to have as a donor.

Donor Dog “Bellzimus” (Virginia )

Bellzimus is a 6 year old Pitbull Cross, she has been donating for approximately 3 years now. She lives with her Human, Vet nurse mum, dad, brother and sister. She also shares her house with four cats and one Chihuahua. I wanted her to be a blood donor just like her mum but also to show that, with the bad rep they have, Pitbulls can also help save lives. She is the most gentle and beautiful dog I have ever had and met! We love her so much and am very proud of her.

Donor Dog “Blue” (Owner Chelsea)

Everyone meet Blue, Blue is an 11-month-old mix breed on the path to becoming a donor, when he is old enough. I want Blue to be able to help other dogs and their owners if needed, and I know there is a lack of donors available for the after-hours clinic. Unfortunately, if a transfusion is required, you can almost guarantee it will be at some horrid time of night, and that’s where my little boy Blue can step in and save a life (we hope, fingers crossed he’s a handy blood type).

Donor Dog “Napoleon” (Owner Miranda)

Napoleon is a Great Dane who is almost 6 years old. He is a blood donor and gave his first donation at 12 months old, and throughout his life, he has donated many times and saved the lives of 6 dogs. As I am also a vet nurse, I have witnessed the process of the collection of blood, and the administration to the patient and Napoleon almost seems to understand the process as he’s usually watching close by. I wanted to try Napoleon as a blood donor as he is very brave and the process doesn’t bother him; he is a large dog with a high blood volume, so the process is quick and easy and wanted to be able to help save the lives of other dogs. Napoleon has never needed to be given sedation during this process, so he leaves the clinic fit and healthy and given a quiet afternoon without any stress and given plenty of treats. Napoleon lives a normal Healthy lifestyle and is not affected in any way by being a blood donor
